Cargo Cult HQ
In the absence of the cash to indulge her software and hardware fantasies Stella Brennan fetishises the husks of hi-tech
gadgets. She obsesses over the periphery of the commodity, hoarding bubble wrap and corrugated card. Her polystyrene,
rubber and fluorescent light sculpture has recently been seen at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth and is
coming soon to the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
Her installation at Lightbox Gallery in Auckland¹s Karangahape Road is Cargo Cult HQ. Dell is a glowing, spooky, shiny
world of weirdly familiar objects, scrawled walls, abandoned x-rays and piles of techno-crud reverentially lit or gaffer
taped into glowing nests. Massed language-lab style headphones whine at a listening-post around a huge wonky glyph
painstakingly copied from a computer carton.
Dell is part reeducation centre, part hideout; a dream of a lost world of perfect information and abundant leisure as
the traffic of K Road grinds by.
Stella Brennan has shown work at Artspace, Auckland; Southern Exposure, San Francisco, and the Physics Room,
Christchurch. She recently received a New Work Grant from Creative New Zealand.
