The major publication Parihaka - The Art of Passive Resistance won a Gold Medal in the recent Pride in Print Awards, the
equivalent of the 'Oscars' for the printing industry.
Parihaka: The Art of Passive Resistance is a 200 page, lavishly illustrated hardcover book, which was produced to
coincide with the major exhibition of the same name. Designed by Eyework Design and Production Ltd, and printed by
Printlink, it features full-colour plates of major artworks shown in the exhibition; reproductions of the commissioned
works; photography; poetry specially commissioned for the exhibition; discussion of earlier plays, songs and poems; and
essays on aspects of Parihaka.
"The Gallery has produced a number of award-winning publications," says Paula Savage, Gallery director, "and we are
particularly proud to add Parihaka to our list. As well as being a beautifully designed and crafted book, it is a
landmark publication in terms of its content and the lasting legacy it provides for the people of Parihaka, and
generations of New Zealanders."
The Gallery publication Les Cleveland Six Decades: Message from the Exterior, also designed by Eyework, won a gold medal
at the 1998 Pride in Print Awards.
The Pride In Print Awards is one the largest awards ceremonies in New Zealand, and was this year held in Rotorua on
Friday 11 May. It recognises excellence in publication design and production processes. The Awards attract round about
1000 entries in 20 different categories. Parihaka - The Art of Passive Resistance won a Gold Medal in the 'Sheet Fed
Printing Four or More Colours - bound by any method' category.
