NZ Soccer Women take on Aussies

Published: Mon 21 May 2001 10:45 AM
The New Zealand Universities Women's Soccer Team will take on 6 Australian university sides in a tour this August. The tour starts with the 1999 Australian university champions University of New South Wales on 20 August and concludes with a game against Charles Sturt University on 30 August.
"This is our year", said coach Macky Singh. "We have the nucleus of the top Otago side, Otago University, two New Zealand goal keepers and a very experienced captain.
"Nika Spedding is both the Otago University captain and has been the NZU captain for a couple of years now, bringing excellent leadership to this side. Penny Stickney (goalkeeper) also plays for Otago University and New Zealand. Ingrid Bain, our other New Zealand goalkeeper, plays for New Brighton in the top Christchurch league.
"The commitment of the players is superb. They displayed good levels of fitness and application at the usit BEYOND Travel University Games this Easter to get selected, and are committed to a six-day training camp before we leave. I see this development as important not only for university soccer but also New Zealand soccer", Mr Singh said.
