Jealous, winners of the Chapman Tripp Award for ‘Most Original Production’ (1999) present a new performance work entitled 'A perfect plan, so perfect that a trivial complication sufficed to spoil it'. A devised physical theatre work, 'A perfect plan…' is structured as a series of narrative loops spanning two hours (performed twice) during the Friday evening rush at the Wellington Railway Station.
Aimed at an audience of commuters and travellers, 'A perfect plan, so perfect that a trivial complication sufficed to spoil it' tells the story of a stranger arriving at a station and missing a connection. The piece is a free adaptation of Italo Calvino’s chapter 'If On a Winter’s Night a Traveller', from the novel of the same name. The title 'A perfect plan, so perfect that a trivial complication sufficed to spoil it' is a direct quote from the book. Employing similar story-telling techniques to films 'The Lost Highway', 'Run Lola Run' and 'Momento', 'A perfect plan…' is told in sample pieces of a complete narrative that build the story, re-arrange the sequence of events and offer alternative readings in 3-7 minute loops. Each loop (or episode) is designed specifically to capture the attention of passers-by, offering them a clear glimpse of a story, but is also of interest to people at the Station for longer, who will see how the loops link together to tell the full story. 'A perfect plan, so perfect that a trivial complication sufficed to spoil it' is an exploration of time and fate in the travels of a stranger.
'A perfect plan, so perfect that a trivial complication sufficed to spoil it' is performed by Jealous regulars Miranda Manasiadis, ('Exit Down Ramp', 'Never Never') Claire Martin ('Strident', 'Fever') and Judy Dale ('Flood', 'Milk'), along with Taika Cohen ('Little Che', 'Haruru Mai'), with music and sound by Sebastian Morgan-Lynch ('Strident', 'When Sun and Moon Collide') and Steve Gallagher ('Credit', 'Flood'). Directed by Tracey Monastra (designer of 'Never Never', 'When Sun and Moon Collide') and Emma Willis ('Never Never', 'Fever'). Produced and publicised by Abigail Slankard ('Between', 'When Sun and Moon Collide')
'A perfect plan, so perfect that a trivial complication sufficed to spoil it' is freely accessible to all those passing through the station as well as those who may have an interest in coming especially to view the performance. Seating will not be supplied and audiences are free to come and go at any time during the performance. We encourage those who would like to stay for more than a few minutes to bring a cushion.
'A perfect plan, so perfect that a trivial complication sufficed to spoil it' is funded by Creative Communities Wellington City, and supported by Tranz Metro.
