Beer Celebration For Capital

Published: Fri 27 Apr 2001 03:50 PM
The Beer Wine and Spirits Council announced today that there will be a major event in Wellington focused on the celebration of beer. The event planned for 2002 has the support of Totally Wellington and the Wellington City Council.
“It will celebrate beer in all its diversity and we look forward to it becoming a highlight of the calendar, along the lines of the recent Pinot Noir 2000,” says the Chief Executive of the Beer Wine and Spirits Council, Nicki Stewart.
“We see Wellington, with its unmatched hospitality infrastructure, as a fabulous city to host this event and we have every confidence that it will be supported by the city, the country’s brewers and the public.”
Wellington’s Mayor, Mark Blumsky, offered his support saying: “We already celebrate the country’s best food and wine – it will be exciting to celebrate our best beer here, too.”
The capital is also at the heart of a region that grows some of the world’s finest hops and produces the bulk of New Zealand’s malt – two essential ingredients of all good beer.
While overall consumption of alcohol is levelling out, premium and boutique beers are enjoying growth. As consumers explore new tastes and styles in a rapidly diversifying market, brewers have responded by making more interesting beers. Women are increasingly choosing beer as their drink of choice and beer lovers are benefiting from a wider range of outlets selling a variety of products.
