TELECOM PROSPECT 2001 – NEW ART NEW ZEALAND ART

This celebration of contemporary New Zealand art will be the country’s first, confirming City Gallery’s commitment to exploring new directions in New Zealand art. Occupying the entire Gallery, it brings together recent work by young artists and the work of more senior practitioners completed within the past two years. The exhibition showcases work in all media including painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and moving image. Initiated by the City Gallery and curated by Lara Strongman, the show will facilitate the interaction and debate essential to developing artistic practices.
RITA ANGUS
7 July – 16 September 2001
The first exhibition of Rita Angus’s work since 1982, featuring her self portraiture; links with artists Lawrence Baigent and Leo Bensemann; and a section entitled ‘Rita Angus’s Wellington’. A touring exhibition from the Hocken Library, University of Dunedin, accompanied by a publication co-produced by City Gallery Wellington.
GAVIN HIPKINS – THE HOMELY

A City Gallery Wellington artist’s project of recent photography by Gavin Hipkins. One of New Zealand’s foremost young photographers, Hipkins deals with themes of nationhood(s), historical folklore and colonial links to the British Empire.
ERIKA—A PORTRAIT BY PETER PERYER
13 July – 16 September 2001
Renowned photographer Peter Peryer made numerous emotionally charged images of his wife Erika in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. This photographic essay, dating from one of the most sustained and fascinating episodes of portraiture in New Zealand photography, is presented for the first time in Erika. A touring exhibition organised by the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
PARADISE LOST—THE ART OF MICHAEL ILLINGWORTH
13 July – 28 October 2001
A timely survey exhibition of an enigmatic, previously little-documented artist. Michael Illingworth’s emblematic figurative paintings, images of suburbia and the social context of his work are explored in this exhibition, which is accompanied by a publication.

THE FEATHER TRADE: Denis O’Connor, 7 Found Poems
30 March – 6 May 2001
Seven sculptural wall-pieces by Denis O’Connor which draw on texts by writers including Wellington’s James Brown, Andrew Johnston, Elizabeth Knox, Bill Manhire and Vincent O’Sullivan. A reading by writers featured in The Feather Trade will be held on Sunday 29 April at 3pm.

Juliet Peter, a friend of Rita Angus and contemporary of Janet Paul, exhibits lithographs, paintings and illustrations from local collections.
