BEER SALES SLIP BUT NOT THE HUMOUR The owner of Birds Liquorsave concedes he sold 9 per cent less beer last year after supermarkets were given the go-ahead to stock beer from December 1999. "Let's face it, the equivalent of 11 large-scale liquor shops opened on one day and only managed to capture 18 per cent of the town's business," said Mr Bird. Beer now accounts for about 35 per cent of his business – down from around 60 per cent four years ago. http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,702081a1601,FF.html
HOW YOU HOLD A BEER SAYS SO MUCH ABOUT YOU JUST when you thought it was safe to drown your sorrows at the pub, new research shows that even the way we hold our pints reveals our innermost secrets. From feeling libidinous to reflective, our grasp on the glass betrays our mood, according to a study. The report, by Dr Aric Sigman, a psychologist and biologist, and sponsored by the brewer Guinness, identifies six basic poses adopted by the average pint drinker. http://www.thescotsman.co.uk/uk.cfm?id=53042
BEER FLOWS IN SUPERMARKETS Beer was the main factor in pushing supermarket Christmas sales up 5 per cent on 1999, reports ACNielsen New Zealand. In its second Christmas in supermarkets, beer accounted for a quarter of the extra sales. Beer and wine accounted for 37% of the increase. http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,698680a1934,FF.html
