Gianni Versace: The Reinvention of Material
(Open 7 April - 15 July 2001)
This exhibition explores the development of Versace's distinctive style and features originals of the legendary
clothing designer's greatest works. In addition to over 150 items of clothing, fabric and accessories, the exhibition
includes images of Versace's creations by top photographers such as Richard Avedon, Bruce Weber and Helmut Newton.
Exhibition highlights include the revealing "safety pin" dress which made Elizabeth Hurley famous in 1994. Other
landmark pieces include Versace's corset and lingerie dresses, asymmetrically draped day and evening wear and fabulous
designs featuring animal prints, studs and metal mesh.

Punkulture: Images from a Music Revolution (Until 27 May 2001)
>From conditions of social decay in the 1970s, Punk flowered. Or should that be glowered? Punks glared, and spat out
their anti-establishment message. 'Bad' language, crude playing, provocative lyrics, and piercings were the shock
tactics they used to shake the system down to its foundations. In the process, they revitalised popular music. Punk soon
spread from its home base in England to other parts of the globe. Included in this exhibition is an exciting Kiwi Punk
component.
Punkulture celebrates in words, pictures, fashion, and music the social phenomenon that was Punk.

This exhibition showcases works from two artists: Pip Culbert and Shigeyuki Kihara. Pip Culbert is a UK artist with
strong ties to New Zealand. Her most characteristic and best-known work displayed in this exhibition, reduces garments
to their 'skeletons' - seams, hems, zips, and fastenings.
Shigeyuki is a Samoan/Japanese artist living in New Zealand. A self-described 'Experi-Mental' artist, Shigeyuki
expresses urban Pacific phenomena through printed T-shirts and installations. The work is smart, irreverent, funny, and
political, acknowledging the heroes of Polynesian hip-hop and satirising some of the dream brands of Pacific history.

NIEUW-ZEELAND - GOING DUTCH (Until January 2002)
Te Papa's second Community Gallery exhibition focuses on the Dutch Community in New Zealand, and tells the moving
stories of some of the approximately 100,000 New Zealanders of Dutch descent. Nieuw- Zeeland - Going Dutch shows a
vibrant community that has greatly enriched our culture.

TE AUPOURI (Until October 2001)
Te Aupouri, an iwi from the far north of Aotearoa, tell their gutsy and compelling story of survival. This exhibition
includes fascinating history, exciting contemporary art, and beautiful carving. Level 4

TOUR Introducing Te Papa 10.15am and 1.30pm
Ideal for first-time visitors, this orientation tour introduces you to the very best of Te Papa. This 45 minute tour is
conducted twice every day. The 10.15am tour departs from the Main Entrance, Level 1(bookings at the Main Entrance from
9.30am). The 1.30pm tour departs from the Information Desk, Level 2 (bookings at the Information Desk from 10am).
Numbers are limited to 15. Price $9.

11.30am - 12.30pm...enjoy traditional and contemporary Irish dance with the Kildunne School of Irish Dance. In the
Wellington Foyer, Level 2.
1pm - 1.45pm and 2.45pm - 3.30pm...tap your toes to the tunes of Rinse O'Murphy. This band plays traditional Celtic jigs
and reels with energy, passion, and irrepressible joy. In the Wellington Foyer, Level 2.
Sunday 18 March - Celtic Weekend @ Te Papa
12pm - 12.45pm and 3pm - 4pm... as seen at the Wellington Edinburgh Tattoo 2000, enjoy the Wellington Combined Highland
Dancers dance to Scottish music. In the Wellington Foyer, Level 2.
1pm-2pm...experience the City of Wellington Pipe band - one of New Zealand's leading pipe bands - with a programme of
traditional Celtic music with Pipes and Drums. In the Te Papa Plaza, Level 1.
2pm - 2.45pm...be thrilled by the nimble steps and fabulous dance formations of the Scottish Country Dancers. In the
Wellington Foyer, Level 2.
2pm - 2.45pm...Mysteries of the Deep! Join Andrew Stewart, one of Te Papa's fish scientists, for a close-up look at some
of the ocean's weirdest fish! There's more in the deep, dark depths than you could ever imagine! In NatureSpace, Level

Coming Events...
Multi-cultural March and Festival of Asia
This continues with Mediterranean Weekend on 24 and 25 March featuring groups from Spain, the Middle East, Italy, North
Africa, Malta, and Greece. The month is topped off with the Festival of Asia on 31 March and 1 April including
international artists Shanxi Drummers from China, Royal Chhau Mask and Dance Troupe from India, Malaysia Cultural Group,
Kalinga Gong Ensemble from The Philippines, as well as groups from Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Singapore - plus much
more!
