Who coaches the coaches? United Soccer 1 answered this question recently when they held a 'Vision Day' for 30 coaches.
Selected coaches, including Orewa resident Scott Beard, Tony Jasper (Takapuna) and Jason Brock-Smith (Henderson), were
invited to attend the event, along with other coaches from North Harbour/Rodney, Waitakere, Northland and the Far North
- the Federation's areas of responsibilities.
United Soccer 1, one of seven federations set up nationwide by Soccer New Zealand, has identified coaching as a crucial
component in achieving its primary aim of growing soccer throughout the region.
During the recent 'Vision Day', coaches were briefed on a number of fundamental areas, including Federation
communication initiatives, youth coaching, fitness, assessment and potential coaching career developments.
In addition, each coach received a diary sponsored by the Lion Foundation, as well as a full 12-month calendar detailing
coaching courses by area and level.
United Soccer 1 Director of Coaching, Keith Pritchett, oversees the development and implementation of the coaching
strategy throughout the region and coordinated the day's activities.
"We see the provision of quality coaching as a key responsibility and imperative to the development and growth of soccer
in our area.
"We are very pleased with the success of the Vision Day and will continue to hold events such as this to build on our
coaches' existing knowledge and skills and help them move ahead in the game."
Mr Pritchett will conduct regular coaching courses to both increase the number of coaches and develop coaching quality.
He will be assisted by soccer heavyweights and former All Whites Ron Armstrong (Albany resident) and Brian Turner (joint
coaches of United Soccer 1's Senior Men's team), together with Billy Harris (Federation Senior Women's team coach).
To provide further support, a regional coach will be appointed for each of United Soccer 1's areas of responsibility.
They will be focused on providing assistance and support to local coaches and will be available to clubs and schools as
a training resource.
"Coaching is a strategic resource, vital at all levels. Our role is to provide coaches with the necessary tools to help
our players enjoy and grow the game of soccer throughout the Federation," says Mr Pritchett.
