PRESENTED BY ARTSPACE AND THE AUCKLAND ART GALLERY
Since October, Los Angeles-based artist Jessica Bronson has been artist in residence at the Govett-Brewster Art
Gallery. You may recall her work from recent New Zealand exhibitions Span and Drive. Bronson is currently showing three
recent projects at the Govett - a small infinite, recollection of a small infinite: 01:03:36:11, and Panamint Tilt. All
employ landscape as a means to explore her five key concerns: space, time, movement, technology and subjectivity.
Bronson uses mirror imagery, image reversal and image multiplication to prompt us to reconsider ideas of landscape. In
addition to the aesthetics of moving image abstraction, she is interested in the notion of "the real" and its precarious
position in our increasingly mediated world.
Panamint Tilt uses immersive vertiginous panoramic projections of the Panamint Mountain Range in Death Valley,
California. Here Bronson's exploration of landscape and the technological sublime is assisted by a soundtrack
reminiscent of Hollywood B-movie sound effects. These eerie, yet humorous, sounds enhance the mirage-like quality of the
warped horizon lines and allude to both old myths of the Western frontier and new myths of alien abductions.
Jessica Bronson was born in Minot, North Dakota, United States in 1963. She holds a Master of Fine Art from Art Center
College of Design, Pasadena, California and a Bachelor of Science, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Her work has featured in group exhibitions at major art galleries and museums in the United States, Europe and Asia, and
her extensive solo exhibition history includes world picture, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 1998 and Red
Line, Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin in 1996. She is currently exhibiting at the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
