SPLIT ENZ THE WINNER IN "RIP IT UP NZ TOP 100" ALBUM COUNTDOWN
Split Enz¹ legendary first album, ŒMental Notes¹ has been voted the number one New Zealand album of all time, in the inaugural Rip It Up NZ Top 100 Album Countdown.
Described as the album that most defined New Zealand music and set the standard in the industry, ŒMental Notes¹ was voted for by a mixture of Rip It Up readers, entertainment writers, musicians and music critics.
In second place was Œ2b Spacific¹ by Che Fu, followed by Shihad¹s ŒKilljoy¹ at number three.
The NZ Top 100 Album Countdown was launched by Rip It Up, New Zealand¹s leading music magazine, in September to recognise the growth and quality of the New Zealand music industry.
Rip It Up editor, Scott Kara said: "There is so much now happening in so many different genres of NZ music, we thought it was about time we took at look at our musical history and where we are coming from.
ŒWe were delighted to see old favourites like Prince Tui Teka and Fred Dagg being recognised in the Top 100, and the winning three albums certainly prove that New Zealanders are appreciative of a number of different styles of music, from pop through to hip hop and rock and roll."
Tim Finn accepted the number one album accolade on behalf of Split Enz. "Phil Judd and I wrote these songs in the summer swoon of 72/73. There was a complex psychology between us and out of that chaos came Mental Notes. On behalf of the early Enz, thanks for stepping into the music and recognising yourselves."
Rip It Up hope that the NZ Top 100 Album Countdown will help to grow the profile of Kiwi music. "It is fantastic that radio stations like Channel Z are supporting the industry, and playing up to 30% New Zealand music, but we would like to see NZ On Air continuing their support and putting even more investment into emerging bands", said Scott Kara.
"Che Fu is an excellent example of how popular more selective genres of Kiwi music can be and we¹d love to see more budding artists and bands given the chance to prove their worth."
The top fifty albums are featured in this month¹s Rip It Up magazine, due out on Thursday December 14th. Albums 50 through to 100 were identified in the October and November issues of Rip It Up.
