NEW ZEALAND FOOD WRITER WINS WORLD TITLE
Wellington food writer David Burton’s latest book, French Colonial Cookery: a cook’s tour of the French-speaking world
has won it’s second international award, this time for Best Study of French Cuisine in the World, at the World Cookbook
Fair in Pergueux, France last week.
French Colonial Cookery won this award from a total of over 2600 books in 18 languages.
This is the second international award for French Colonial Cookery, which previously won the category for Best Study of
French Cuisine in English at the World Cookbook Fair.
The judges’ notes said: “this book fills a real need, there is really nothing that can be compared to it. The
introduction is a masterpiece, a real “tour de force,” a much-needed book which probably could be as well or better done
by an author who is not French.”
The judges found the central theme of the book to be “that the future of French cuisine, far from the fighting of three
star chefs, could come from the cuisine of the Francophonie, from the old French-speaking colonies.” They also commented
that French Colonial Cookery is “well researched and written, and thought provoking”.
The book includes a chapter on the cooking of the former French settlement at Akaroa.
