Release from: New Zealand Retail Meat and Allied Trades Federation
Woolworths Bay of Plenty Meat Packers make great sausages. Not only did they win two of the six categories of this
year’s NZ Sausage of the Year Competition, but they also took the supreme award for the best sausage of 2000 with their
entry in the traditionally flavoured category.
This morning a group of food celebrities which included Des Britten, Loius Daish, Simon Holst, Mark Limacher and Celia
Murphy, judged the six category winners against one another before announcing that Woolworths’ Bay of Plenty Meat
Packers had produced the supreme sausage with its Traditional Cheese entry.
“It has been an exhausting process for judges and organisers alike,” said spokesperson Barry Whitaker of the Retail Meat
and Allied Trades Federation. “The standard was extremely high and it often took a lot of re-cooking and re judging
before the final decision was reached,” he added.
Other category winners were:
Best beef Cross Brothers of Christchurch
Best pork Normanby Butchery Taranaki
Best saveloy Peter Timbs Meats Christchurch
Best Traditionally
Flavoured Woolworths Bay of Plenty Meat Packers (and supreme award)
Best Exotic Coq Au Vin Wellington
Best Pre cooked Woolworths Bay of Plenty Meat Packers
Winners receive gold plaques and Woolworths will receive a trophy for their supreme award.
