scientists have bred rats with beer bellies and expect the rats may reveal whey middle-aged men accumulate fat around
the middle. "We know that fat in the abdomen is associated with a range of risks including heart disease, stroke,
diabetes and hypertension but we don't yet know why, and these rats may help us find out," said Professor Iain Robinson

"WIECKSE WITTE" INTRODUCED TO NZ MARKET DB Breweries is introducing a traditional European white beer to the New Zealand
market. The Dutch-brewed beer, Wieckse Witte, is pronounced 'Week-sa Wit-ta.' It will be available shortly on tap at
limited outlets throughout summer. Translated from Dutch it means, "white beer of the Wieck", which is where the De
Ridder Brewery that makes Wieckse Witte is located. The Wieck is a part of Maastricht - Holland's most southern city.
Wieckse Witte is a five per cent beer brewed with citrus and spices according to an old method and recipe. Being an
unfiltered, white beer it has a slightly cloudy appearance which gives the beer its natural flavour and

NZ HOP SPRING REPORT The New Zealand harvest from the March 2000 crop has been sold as the market firmed following a
less than satisfactory European crop and hop warehouse fires in the USA this same year. At time of writing, the 2001 New
Zealand crop has also been substantially sold with several customers firming up on contracts for upwards of five years
forward. Two new cultivars Nelson Sauvin and Pacific Sunrise have been released from the New Zealand Hop breeding
program in the past two years, which has been an outstanding result for Dr Ron Beatson and his team at the Hort +

PLANNED IPO VALUES BELGIAN BREWERY ABOVE ANHEUSER-BUSCH Interbrew, the world's second largest brewer, plans to raise as
much as 3.3 billion euros (US$2.8 billion) to fund expansion with its first sale of shares to the public after six
centuries as a private company. The maker of Bass in England, Stella Artois in Europe and Rolling Rock in the U.S. said
it will sell shares for between 30 euros and 38 euros each. At the high end, Interbrew would fetch 27 times operating
profit per share, while Anheuser-Busch, the world's biggest brewer, trades at 18 times. The Belgian company, which has
acquired 30 rivals since 1991, is pushing ahead with the sale before U.K. regulators have ruled on itsUS$3.3 billion
