'Supporting the Kaupapa - A Concert for Parihaka'

Some of Wellington's finest musicians will join forces for an afternoon of inspired sounds in Civic Square, based around the theme of Parihaka and its two leaders, Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi.
A great start to the summer "Supporting the Kaupapa - A Concert for Parihaka" will feature an exciting mix of jazz, reggae, Hip Hop and traditional waiata. The afternoon will be MC-ed by Paora Ropata, breakfast host on Atiawa Toa FM and include artists: David Grace & Whanau; Emma Paki; Wai 100%; Dallas Tamaira; Toni Huata; Voodoo Chile; Te Kupu and Trinity Roots.
'Supporting the Kaupapa' will profile the talents of a number of the participating artists who have recently or are soon to release new singles and albums including: Te Kupu (solo album 'Te Matakahi Kupu' and the 3rd Upper Hutt Posse album 'Ma Te Wa'), Trinity Roots (debut EP - 'Trinity Roots'), Toni Huata ('Te Maori e'), WAI 100% (compilation album WAI 100%) and Voodoo Chile (single 'TRICKSTA & producer of the new album compilation WAHINE REPREZENT released last weekend). Artists on tour include Dallas Tamaira who will be travelling across the country - Summer 2001 with songs included on his single 'Better Than Change' and Toni Huata who is travelling the North Island with Taki Rua Production's play 'Tu Rangatahi, Tu Tangata' . WAI 100% will be performing a debut 'WAI 100% Live Show' at Te Papa on the 23rd of Dec 2000. Other participating artists include: David Grace, whose music featured in the soundtrack of Once Were Warriors and is a pioneer in contemporary music in Te Reo Maori and award-winning Emma Paki who regularly performs at the Paua Bar and at Blue Note.
'Supporting the Kaupapa - A Concert for Parihaka' is the last event in the popular public programme that has been running since the opening of the exhibition 'Parihaka - The Art of Passive Resistance'.
Young people from Parihaka are back this weekend for the final time. They will talk to visitors about key artworks and their experiences of growing up at Parihaka. They are on the Gallery floor from 10.30am to 5pm throughout the weekend. This programme has been funded by Te Waka Toi, Creative New Zealand. The exhibition runs until 19 January 2001, and is open daily (except Christmas Day) from 10am to 5pm. ADMISSION FREE.
