Art History of Parihaka
The work of many contemporary artists has been influenced by the story of Parihaka. While some artists have a personal
connection to the place, others have purposefully made a place for Parihaka in their work. Art historian Dr Deidre Brown
will look at the different 'ways of seeing' Parihaka, its people, and its events, as presented in recent art,
architecture, design and non-fiction writing.
Sunday 5 November, 3 pm
Artists in Conversation with Jonathan Mane-Wheoki and Roma Potiki Traditions grow and evolve, with artists often
interpreting key events, ideas and proposing possible futures. Artists whose works are included in the exhibition
discuss their response to Parihaka, and consider their engagement with political and cultural issues. A debate on some
of the key issues for contemporary Maori art.

Dad Grace and Whanau DAVID GRACE * David Grace will perform with Johnny Grace and Himiona Grace. * David Grace was
lead guitarist/vocalist/songwriter for: Dread Beat and Blood (1984-1987); Survival (1987-1992); Injustice (1995-present)
* Winner of Showcase 1998 * Recordings: Contributions to the soundtrack of Once Were Warriors; Tribal Stomp
(2 tracks on the Compilation CD); Weapons of Peace
Te Kupu TE KUPU * Ngati Huia. Based in the Kapiti Coast. * Dean Hapeta a.k.a Te Kupu a.k.a D Word has been
bringing out South Pacific indigenous hip hop and reggae for 15 years. * In 1988 he wrote and then released 'E Tu ', the first rap recording to be released in Aotearoa through 'Upper Hutt Posse ' the seminal group he continues to lead and manage today. * Te Kupu has just completed the third Upper Hutt Posse
album 'Ma Te Wa ' for release in October 2000 * Te Kupu has recently released his latest solo album - 'Te Matakahi Kupu' * See:

Emma Paki EMMA PAKI * Ngai Te Rangi, Ngati Awa. Based in Wellington. * Emma's incredible talent has assured her
great success in the music industry. * Different NZ Music Awards presented her with music awards for: * Best
Songwriter 1993 * Most Promising Female Vocalist 1993 * Mana Maori 1996 * Four 'Best Music Video' awards 1993 *
With two nominations for best female vocalist and best album, her first album Oxygen of Love gained gold status in NZ
after its release in 1996. * Emma regularly performs at the Paua Bar and at Blue Note.
Toni Huata TONI HUATA * Ngati Kahungunu, Rongowhakaata, Lebanese, German, Scandinavian, Irish. * Toni will
perform with other artists at "Supporting the Kaupapa" * Toni has recently release 'Te Maori e' - dedicated to her
grandparents, the late Ngaro and Te Okanga (Aussie) Huata. The album is built around the song Te Maori e composed by
Aussie, for the Te Maori exhibition in 1986. * Contributory musicians: Chaitanya Temepara ( 1996 Showcase Winner ), Te
Ahukaramu Charles Royal ( Writer, Te Tohu Mauriora ), Rob Winch ( Commercial composer ), Chris 'Mu' Faimu ( DJ & Producer ), Warren Maxwell ( Trinity Roots ), Maaka Mc Gregor ( Southside of Bombay ), Brannigan Kaa ( Brown Street,
Wild Poppies ). * Toni is currently touring the North Island with a Te Reo Maori play ,'Tu Rangatahi, Tu Tangata'
through Taki Rua Productions. She began this post her album launch in October and will complete it in early December. *

The man with the golden voice has become a firm favourite of Wellingtonians and with the forthcoming release of his
debut single, "Better Than Change" we're convinced the world is going to sit up and take notice. The single is described
as "a love song about regret." Dallas, originally from Kaikoura, describes the track as paying homage to his first
musical loves, soul and blues. Wellington DJ and top fella, Mu is on production duties offering a fine flavour, no
doubt. The video for the single Better Than Change is to be made by this year's NZ Music Video awards winner, Sima
