AAARGH! - The Live Movie Experience

Published: Tue 24 Oct 2000 10:19 AM
Enjoy all the fun of the movies yet have a spectacular night at the theatre as well! You can do it at BATS Theatre¹s new STAB production.
AAARGH! The Live Movie Experience is this year¹s recipient of the BATS Theatre STAB commission in association with Creative New Zealand, which is given to groups wishing to explore new theatre styles and technology in performance.
For the duration of AAARGH! BATS will be converted into a live picture theatre. It will be a little like the Embassy, but with all the luxurious trimmings of BATS. AAARGH! is a collection of short films performed live on stage and projected instantaneously before the audience at BATS. The most exciting element of the project is the challenge of achieving in one hour what film crews take months to do.
AAARGH! combines all the different film-making processes needed to create a short film live on stage: acting, stunts, foley, music, lighting, editing, special effectsŠAll these elements will then be projected onto the big screen.
The initial scripts have been written by Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie and Duncan Sarkies, with the help of Taika Cohen and Gentiane Lupi, and will be developed by the cast, as they discover what is possible in the realm of live film-making.
The films include a documentary on the Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, with replicated early 1960¹s Russian footage; an action quick-flic incorporating the mastery of Kung Fu cinematography and action choreography; a deep-sea love affair; and an abridged 70¹s Kiwi-cult-epic featuring on-stage claymation by Guy Capper.
For an unforgettable live night at the movies, come to AAARGH! The Live Movie Experience, live on stage at BATS.
