On Tour in Christchurch
New Zealand, 21 October 2000. The five equal New Zealand winning finalists of the Nokia Arts Awards Asia Pacific 2000
will be on show at The Centre of Contemporary Art (COCA), 66 Gloucester Street, Christchurch from 23 to 28 October. The
works have recently been on display at the Chiaroscuro Gallery in Auckland and at The Academy of Fine Arts in
Wellington. Entry is free and members of the public, particularly students interested in entering next year’s Nokia Arts
Awards, are encouraged to visit the exhibition.
The winners were announced at a function held at the Chiaroscuro Gallery in Auckland on 3 October. Each of the five
winners received $5000 cash from Nokia to further their arts education. They also received a trophy and a Nokia mobile
phone.
The inaugural Nokia Arts Awards Asia Pacific was launched in 1999 across 12 countries in the Asia Pacific region with
the intent to assist and encourage young artists. The theme of the Nokia Arts Awards for this year was ‘Playground of
your Imagination’. Fourteen countries in the region have participated this year. Entrants were required to use paint or
a combination of paint and mixed media in their interpretation of the theme and entry was open to students aged between
17 and 25.
The five works on show at COCA are: ‘Making a New World’ by Ja-Young Lee; ‘You Can Have It All ***’ by Holly West;
‘Vistaview’ by Shireen Perez; ‘Make-Up’ by Chantelle Smith and ‘Field Series’ by Stephanie Pyne.
The five finalists and their works will go on to represent New Zealand in the region-wide Nokia Asia Pacific Arts Awards
finals and join other winners from 14 participating markets in the Asia Pacific region. The finalists will convene in
Korea in January 2001 where their works will be judged by an international panel of judges to compete for the top
regional prizes.
