35kg Cheese Part Of Foodtown/Countdown Auckland Festival Of Europe Celebrations
A 35 kg Swiss gruyere cheese wheel will be part of Foodtown and Countdown’s involvement in the Festival of Europe,
sweeping Auckland this month and next.
The cheese, brought to New Zealand by Kapiti Cheeses, is thought to be the largest unpasteurised cheese wheel ever seen
in this country. Made from 400 litres of fresh, aromatic, unpasteurised cows’ milk in the small Swiss village of
Gruyeres, the 600mm diameter wheel will be cut and pieces sold at Foodtown Greenlane at 10am on November 4.
Other events at the supermarket group during the two week festival, running from October 27 to 12 November, will offer
Aucklanders the chance to taste a bit of Europe and even, win a European holiday.
Well-known Auckland chefs from MJs, Anzu, Hammerheads, Tribeca, Harbourside, Kermadec, the Belgium Beer Café and the
Heritage Hotel will be in six of the company’s Foodtown supermarkets demonstrating their favourite European recipes.
In all 23 Foodtown stores and four Countdown supermarkets will be involved, with in-store demonstrations promoting
European foods and recipes. There’ll also be displays and specials on European products.
Also, all Auckland Foodtown and Countdown customers have the opportunity to win a trip to London and Italy, valued at
$10,000, plus luxury weekend breaks in Auckland hotels, when buying Festival of Europe demonstration products.
The Festival of Europe was initiated by a group of European Business Councils and Trade Commissions, which wanted to
focus on the trade between New Zealand and Europe.
Numerous activities and events around Auckland are planned, including a European film festival, Italian art exhibition,
Galeries Lafayette fashion show, Viennese Ball and a Belgian Beer and Food Festival.
