MAKING THE START OF THE FISHING SEASON A FAMILY AFFAIR
Tens of thousands of freshwater anglers will be out on Sunday, around the country, to enjoy the start of the first trout and salmon fishing season of the millennium, and Fish and Game New Zealand is offering a new family fishing licence to encourage families to take up the sport.
“The first weekend of the fishing season always promises some great fishing,”says Bryce Johnson, Director of Fish and Game New Zealand,”as the fish haven’t seen an angler all winter.”
“For the first time we are offering a new family fishing licence to encourage partners and children to go along and make fishing a family affair. Two adults and their children, aged under 20, can fish all season for $90. One of the adults nominated as the ‘primary’ licence holder can use the licence as a standard adult whole of season licence.”
“We’ve tested the licence and the result has been fantastic. More partners and children are realising that you don’t just have to sit on the riverbank reading a book while someone fishes. Freshwater angling is an easy outdoor sport everyone can enjoy.”
Says Mr Johnson: “Most New Zealand rivers will be open from 1 October, although a few South Island backcountry rivers will open later. Anglers can get information on rivers and regulations from our website at { HYPERLINK http://www.fishandgame.org.nz }www.fishandgame.org.nz or by using the information booklet which comes with their licence.”
