Children can try out their skills in flax weaving, poi-making - then hear Maori myths and legends read by popular
storytellers, as part of the Gallery's exciting school holiday programme.
"All the activities are based around the Parihaka exhibition," says education coordinator Justine McLisky. "In the
workshops, children learn how to prepare harakeke (flax), and make and decorate headbands, flowers and other objects.
They can also have fun making and using poi."
"We are lucky to have young people from Parihaka helping with some of the workshops," says McLisky. "They are passing on
their unique knowledge of the arts, crafts and songs, from growing up and living at Parihaka."
Also proving popular is free daily storytelling in the South Gallery upstairs at 12-1pm. Popular Maori storytellers,
including Hera Taute and Paora Ropata, are entrancing children and adults alike with stories and legends based on Maori

Thurs 5 October. Activities suitable for 5-8 year olds (10am -12pm) and 9-12 year olds (1-3pm). $5 materials charge per
