What comes to mind when you hear the word jazz? Miles Davis, Sun Ra,
Blue Train, Giant Step? Maybe then, but what about now?
Jazz has been around since the beginning of last century, and it has been represented by a lot of different sounds on
its journey into the 21st century. The sophistication of the 1920s, the bebop of the 40s and 50s, Dixieland, jazz rock
fusion and the psychedelic jazz of the 60¹s and 70s. But where is jazz now, how is it spelt, what does it sound like?
Many of these questions can be answered by The New Jazz Transplant.
The New Jazz Transplant is a live performance fusion in the context of clubbing. Brought to you by the Matterhorn people
and following performances at The Wellington International Jazz Festival 2000. It¹s a venue showcasing what jazz has
become and where its going, played by a diverse bunch of Wellington musicians and DJs, think Carl Craig¹s Innerzone
Orchestra. The New Jazz Transplant opens on the luckiest day of the year, Friday the 13th of October at the old St Johns
in Cable Street. The New Jazz Transplant runs through three weekends and two weeks of The Wellington International Jazz
Festival.
The New Jazz Transplant showcases all children of jazz, with a host of DJs and Live musicians covering the bases. From
the sweet soul sounds of Motown with The Soul Emergency, the South American percussion house styles of Electric Brasil,
the lounging sounds of the 50s with A Taste Of Honey and the sampled jazz break-beats of Drum and Bass with Soul In
Motion.
There is more than enough Live content jamming the Old St. Johns / Club WGTN. We are pleasured to announce a varied
programme of live and experimental sounds from local acts, Optimus Prime, Fat Freddys Drop, Cuffy and Leon D, Ebb,
Dallas and Jonathan Crayford, The Black Seeds and TrinityRoots.

influence of Motown and the jazz legacy of Chicago together for an innovative live show. He is joined by Recloose, who
will be remixing his original hip hop and house fusions live for the floor.
