Fletcher Challenge provides support
for Arts Foundation heritage work
AUCKLAND, 12 September 2000 – Prime Minister and Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Helen Clark, last night announced a new initiative to support New Zealand’s art heritage. At a ceremony which marked the inaugural Arts Foundation Laureates, Fletcher Challenge Limited Chairman Dr Roderick Deane presented a cheque which demonstrates the company’s support for work in this area.
“The arts have always been an important part of the Fletcher Challenge community investment spectrum” said Dr Deane. “Our support of the Fletcher Challenge Ceramics Award for many years helped to raise the profile of ceramic artists in New Zealand, and from throughout the world. This investment in the Arts Foundation’s initiative to honour the pioneers, elders, and ‘greats’ of New Zealand art, is a very appropriate way to link the role that Fletcher Challenge has played in the business heritage of New Zealand with events and people who have helped make New Zealand’s art heritage”, he said.
The sponsorship, of $50,000, will be used to begin the Arts Foundation’s work on honouring those who have made significant contributions to New Zealand art. The form in which recognition will be given is still being formulated but Richard Cathie, Chairman of the Arts Foundation of New Zealand, confirmed that this support will enable the Arts Foundation to accelerate its plans, and to bring closer the dream of recognising pioneers, elders, and other important contributors to New Zealand art.
