NOKIA ARTS AWARDS EXHIBITION OPENS IN AUCKLAND
Winning artworks from students across Asia Pacific showcased
Auckland, 14 August 2000 - Nokia unveiled the first ever Nokia Arts Awards Exhibition incorporating all 58 winning artworks of the Nokia Arts Awards - Asia Pacific 1999 competition.
Hailed as one of the most comprehensive region-wide arts competition in Asia Pacific, the inaugural Nokia Arts Awards covered a dozen countries. These include Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and New Zealand.
Five New Zealand artists works are included in the exhibition which has already toured galleries in Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, China and Hong Kong since the beginning of this year. The artworks will be sold or returned to the artists at the conclusion of the New Zealand exhibition.
"We hope this exhibition inspires and encourages our young New Zealand artists to pick up their brushes and enter our current competition" says Pierre Middleton, country manager for Nokia Mobile Phones NZ. "An opportunity to win prizes and promote your work in other countries is an excellent way for our young talent to progress their artistic careers", he says.
The 1999 Nokia Arts Awards Competition
Based on the theme "Visions of Your Future", Nokia invited arts students aged between 18 -25 years to share their creative vision by participating in the event focussed on two-dimensional art. In keeping with Nokia's core brand values, the competition aimed to celebrate innovation, artistic vision and the creative human spirit amongst youth by offering them a unique opportunity to share their inspired work with some of the best artistic talents in the region.
"The theme "Visions of Your Future" was a call to the students to express, critique, celebrate and respond to their environment and at the same time envision a future, creating a unique link between society, art and contemporary concerns. The resulting works are a rich and varied sampling of some of the best in students' art. Each piece of work speaks of a passionate response from the artist to a dynamic and changing world," said Frank Nuovo, Nokia's senior designer.
Highly evident from the submitted paintings were the students' vivid imagination and creativity in envisaging a future of technological influence. Others showcased their visual thoughts of the environment in the millennium and yet other students saw the stability of the inner-self and the endurance of the human spirit as a guide through a chaotic and ever changing world.
"Art is mankind's most enduring form of communication. Through nurturing the arts and providing an inspiring forum for the display of talents, the Nokia Arts Awards aims to further promote the growth of the creative arts across the Asia Pacific," said Nigel Litchfield, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Asia Pacific.
