Hokey Pokey Turns Japanese
A classic New Zealand icon is about to be unwrapped by consumers in Japan.
After almost 50 years as our top selling flavour, New Zealand-made Hokey Pokey ice cream is to go on sale in grocery stores throughout Japan.
The export initiative follows increasing demand from Japanese visitors who regard Hokey Pokey as a taste sensation from Down Under.
Tip Top Managing Director Ray O'Connor says many Japanese tourists discover the frozen treat while holidaying in New Zealand. He says they return home wanting more.
"In recent years we have had a flood of inquiries at our office in Japan," he says.
"A few months ago we began a special trial of Hokey Pokey in Tokyo. The flavour was well received by consumers, and Japanese retailers say they're now expecting big demand."
Hokey Pokey ice cream will be officially unveiled at a Tokyo supermarket on August the 7th. Company representatives and New Zealand trade officials will be on hand for the launch.
Tip Top workers is also planning an informal Launch Day presentation to a group of Japan's toughest judges - a class of youngsters at a Tokyo primary school.
Hokey Pokey is New Zealand's most popular ice cream. Next month's planned launch in Japan will be the first time the famous brand has been available outside the Pacific region.
Produced at Tip Top's Christchurch factory and packaged in new 47Oml containers, the export ice cream is now making it's way to Japan.
The first shipment of Hokey Pokey has already left Christchurch. By the end of July, more than 30 container loads will be on their way to Japan. Tip Top expects Hokey Pokey in Japan will attract annual sales of up to NZ$3 million.
