Saatchi strikes Gold at Cannes with City Gallery advert
A 'live action' cinema advert, produced for the Eyecons: Tony Oursler and Jeffrey Shaw exhibition, has won the only Gold
award for 'Best Use of Cinema' at the Media Lions Awards.
The award was presented at the annual Cannes International Advertising Festival in June, and was Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand's first Media Gold Award. "We are delighted to win gold at Cannes, the world's premier advertising
festival," says James Hall, CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi Wellington. "It's the result of a long relationship with City Gallery which produces outstanding creative
communications. The award shows the Gallery and Saatchi & Saatchi are doing world class work together."
"Saatchi & Saatchi Wellington are always pushing the limits of advertising, and the hi-tech, multimedia Eyecons show was the
perfect opportunity to be experimental," says Paula Savage, Gallery director. "Their innovative advert brought out the
show's themes of virtual reality and the duality of 'real' and projected images."
The winning advert, created by Maggie Mouat and Eugene Ruane, featured an actress walking down the cinema aisle and
later 'appearing' on the screen as part of the advert. Local actress Colleen McColl performed the ad around 30 times at
Mid City Hoyts during July 1999.
Saatchi & Saatchi Wellington's advertisement for The Exhibition of the Century in 1998 won a Bronze award in the Entertainment
Promotion category at the 1999 New York Festivals. It also won a Silver in the Travel, Tourism and Hospitality category
in the 1999 Axis Awards in New Zealand.
