BUDDING NZ WRITER COLLECTS $10,000 SCHOLARSHIP FROM MAJOR INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHER.
Random House New Zealand presented a $10,000 scholarship to David Glynn at the Auckland Writers Festival last night.
David Glynn's was just one of hundreds of applications received by Random House since their announcement of the Vintage
10th Birthday Scholarship on 15 March 2000. The Vintage Scholarship was open to emerging writers, holding New Zealand
citizenship who had never before had their work published.
Well known author and poet, Bill Manhire, who judged the entries on behalf of Random House, said of Glynn's work that it
was extremely compelling, and that it was rare to see writing of such quality in a debut novel.
David Glynn will use part of the $10,000 scholarship to do further research so that he can complete his novel.
Random House launched the paperback imprint, Vintage, in 1990. Since its launch, Vintage has become a vibrant and much
applauded list both internationally and in New Zealand, with such authors as Salman Rushdie, Rose Tremain, J M Coetzee,
Janet Frame, Alan Duff and Dame Fiona Kidman. New Zealand Vintage Publisher, Harriet Allan, says of the Vintage 10th
Birthday Scholarship, "Presents are always given on birthdays, so it's great to be giving this one to a new writer to
mark the 10th year of Vintage."
