Bi-hemispheric theatre group, In Transit, returns to Wellington with their new play, CREDIT.
The theatre company's principals work between Europe and New Zealand to bring a New Zealand spin to the Jacques Lecoq-inspired tradition of theatre, a style which develops its characters and dialogue out of an holistic physical approach.
In Transit's Wellington born director, Juliet O'Brien, comes to CREDIT after her success in Paris in the modern Polish classic The Mother by Stanislaw Witkiewicz.
"It was pretty crazy. The director was actually Polish and is very well known in Poland and the US. But he didn't speak French and everything had to be translated from Polish into French and back again. Fortunately he had some English - which meant I was translating as well".
"The play was quite controversial. Eastern European things are very hot in France right now, but people reacted very strongly for or against the play because of the expressionistic production".
O'Brien says it was also quite exciting to be rehearsing for the play while French singing legend Juliette Greco was performing in the same theatre.
O'Brien's experience in European theatre began after she studied at the internationally renowned Ecole Jacques Lecoq and since then has performed throughout Europe. She first returned to New Zealand with the solo show In Transit and last year presented Extraordinary Lives at Circa.
She's rejoined in CREDIT by her Extraordinary Lives co-star Kat Davison. English born Davison is also a Lecoq graduate who first joined In Transit for their Swiss production, Brainstorm. She first came to New Zealand last year for Extraordinary Lives and fell in love with the country while diving for crayfish at Titahi Bay.
A new In Transit member this time round is Timothy Bartlett. Bartlett is one of New Zealand's best known performers. Most recently he was in the long running show Shear Madness. He is also well-known through his numerous television performances.
In Transit is also pleased that it's working with a highly talented local production team. It includes musician and composer Steve Gallagher who's being assisted by Andrew Pennell and opera singer Joanna Heslop. Tracey Monastra from Jealous Theatre is the production designer and lighting design is by Jennifer Lal.
CREDIT is the story of a shopaholic, a bureaucrat, and a receptionist at a leg waxing clinic who all live in the same apartment building. And that's their only connection apart from their frustrated dreams and the sound of the opera singer upstairs. Basically they're obsessive loners. But when they hit money trouble a web of unknown connections brings them together, forcing them to confront the choice between living their dreams or continuing frustrated lives.
In Transit Theatre's previous work has been acclaimed wherever it has been performed. In Transit productions have been described as "richly funny, satisfying and thought provoking." (The Listener) "a joy... one hour of sheer theatrical pleasure." (The Sunday Star Times) "A dazzling performance. A work of stunning physical theatre." (The Age Melbourne) "In Transit treats us to a new breed of theatre bare of dusty ingredients." (Berner Tagwacht, Switzerland) "... a delightfully warm comedy which also provides food for thought." (The Dominion).
In Transit is supported by Creative New Zealand
