HAPPY, TEXAS ------------- When two prison escapees - fraud offender Harry Sawyer (Jeremy Northam) and Wayne Wayne Wayne Jnr. (Steve Zahn) - arrive in the small Texan town of Happy in their getaway mobile home, they are mistaken for Pageant Masters brought in to coach the towns entrants in the districts "Little Miss Fresh Squeezed" Pre-Teen Beauty Pageant. Realising that this could provide an unexpected safe-haven from their fugitive status, the two reluctantly adopt the personas of the gay pageant gurus, and set about weaving their magic with the local kids. Keeping up the act, however, complicates their relationships with both the men, and women of the town. Described as a contemporary screwball-western farce, Happy, Texas was a hit at the 1999 Sundance Festival, earning Steve Zahn the Special Jury Prize for his performance.
Screening at the Rialto Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch.
