A New Zealand writers' web-site is currently running a pioneering online survey to find out how much New Zealand
freelance writers earn, and how this compares with the earnings of freelance writers from other parts of the world.
Nicole Bishop, the Wellingtonian who runs the web-site, says she was inspired to run this survey because of questions
she has been fielding from visitors to the site since it was launched in 1998 - questions like:
"Are NZ writers *really* dirt poor?"
"How do the earnings of freelance writers in NZ compare with those of writers overseas?"
"Is it possible to make a decent living in NZ from a profession as a freelance writer?"
"Do self-employed technical writers earn more or less than freelance journalists?" "How much do highly experienced NZ
writers earn per word? Per hour? Per year? Is this more or less than writers in other countries earn?"
"How much do less experienced NZ writers earn per word? Per hour? Per year? Is this more or less than writers in other
countries earn
New Zealand freelance writers, both part-time and full-time, are being asked to participate in the survey, and it is
open to writers of all kinds - including authors, editors, copywriters, corporate writers, journalists, and technical
writers.
