The National Maritime Museum Red Sock $2 weekend is just one of the key initiatives planned to add pzazz to the first weekend of the AMERICA's Cup defence.
Marketing Manager Roger Smith says, "The Maritime Museum has had record numbers of overseas visitors this summer, well up on previous seasons and we have had a wonderful response to the AMERICA's Cup exhibition from these visitors, We wish more locals were finding the time to get down here and see it as the display finishes at the end of the Cup regatta. With the red socks campaign kicking off this weekend, we are thrilled to be able to offer patriotic kiwis an opportunity to see the Museum and the AMERICA's Cup exhibition for only $2, further demonstrating that we are wholly behind the Cup and Team New Zealand."
The first fifty visitors on both Saturday and Sunday will also receive an official Team New Zealand poster, so don't miss out on this great opportunity to be the best informed Team New Zealand fan in town.
For just $2 and wearing your red socks, you will have the opportunity to unique historic footage of the AMERICA's Cup, all that remains of the original yacht America, and enjoy "Sailing Kiwis and the Cup" which traces kiwis long love affair with the water from P Class yachts to Black Magic.
Plus The ELIZA HOBSON - the Museum's latest historic steam cruiser will be on the harbour this weekend to view The Endeavour from the sea. The Salty Sam luncheon cruise will be available both days, departing at the sound of the midday cannon and not forgetting that old Seadog Salty Sam himself, who brings NZ's maritime history alive.
Other initiatives planned for this weekend include a Red Socks Salute organised by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron with already more than 350 vessels scheduled to be on the harbour Friday at 4.30pm. The Museum's own heritage icons The TED ASHBY and The BREEZE will participate.
