LACK OF BINDING AGREEMENT BY OECD HIGHLIGHTS ADVANTAGE OF BUYING LOCAL
The OECD’s E-Commerce guidelines are a welcome move towards providing security for on-line shoppers, however the lack of
a binding agreement leaves consumers at risk when shopping offshore, according to Shane Frith, owner of Discounts
On-line.
“The safest on-line shopping is conducted locally, as consumers remain protected by New Zealand law,” said Mr Frith.
“The safest protection for a consumer is to use some common sense, and see if the company that you are dealing with is
for real.”
“Issues to look for are local telephone numbers, and a physical address.”
“If they can’t answer a telephone, or don’t wish to tell you where they are based, be very careful.”
“We at Discounts On-line prefer to deal with people via e-mail, however we are always more than happy to take telephone
calls, or have customers call around.”
“We have even had customers driving across town to pay in cash!”
“E-commerce offers a wonderful future for consumers with a wide range of products and lower prices, but with the
benefits come new risks,” concluded Mr Frith.
