Floodgates Open to USA Market for New Zealand’s Delphic
In another David versus Goliath clincher, New Zealand software company Delphic Medical Systems has secured a groundbreaking first-time US deal in Indianapolis, opening the floodgates for more sales to the lucrative American market.
The deal is for the sale of Delphic’s Palms Anatomical Pathology (AP) software – part of a software suite for pathology laboratories – to a company called American Health Network. To achieve the sale Delphic, an Auckland based software developer employing 40 people, beat major US based competitors 10 times their size, including a company listed on the US Stock Exchange.
“The deal is directly worth a six figure New Zealand sum,” says General Manager and company co-founder Roger Seaton. “Its added value will be in opening the door to a gigantic potential market.”
American Health Network is a medium sized laboratory run and owned by physicians, and operating in Ohio and Indianapolis.
“The sale is something of a showcase for our product,” says Mr Seaton. “Not only is it a visible site in a competitive market, it also allows us to develop the product to meet various kinds of Federal and State reporting systems. In the US, special reports from pathology labs are required to meet high quality standards and procedures. Our product now meets these standards extremely well.”
Mr Seaton says that the advantages of Palms AP over some of its competitors are many.
“Most who see Palms AP fall in love with it. Where we have the advantage is it uses the latest and greatest in modern technology because it’s based on Lotus Notes,” he says. “We also have an on-line diagnostic facility for any issues with the software. They’re diagnosed and fixed from New Zealand, on line. In contrast, many of our competitors still just have 0800 numbers for enquiries and issues.
“Another benefit is the quickness of installation. We know some of our competitors are taking 32 to 40 weeks to install their software. Even allowing for the time we spend coming to and from New Zealand, we take less than half the time. The cost, too, with the lower New Zealand dollar is highly competitive.”

Palms AP is a module from a suite of software developed by Delphic. The software system streamlines work in histopathology and cytopathology laboratories. It provides a fully electronic environment which allows teams of pathologists to produce reports on patient specimens more efficiently, providing results more quickly to referring doctors. Pathologists can more effectively monitor progress of reporting, and provide scientist, technologist and secretarial access to the same information throughout the process.
Palms AP is already in use widely throughout New Zealand and has been exported to Australia and Holland.
Delphic Medical Systems Limited is an entrepreneurial software company based in Auckland. It has a reputation for delivering software and systems within tight time frames, and is regarded as one of New Zealand’s top software exporters.
