Nokia Announced Membership In Hiperlan2 Global Forum
New Wireless LAN Standard HIPERLAN 2 Enables High-Speed Connections in Mobile Information Society
Nokia announced today its participation in the new HiperLAN2 Global Forum to promote the HIPERLAN2 standard worldwide
and to ensure the completion of the standard, which will enable high-speed connectivity for mobile communications in
corporate, public and home environments. Employment of the HIPERLAN 2 standard will provide wireless transfer of data
between portable devices and access points at speeds of up to 54 megabits per second.
"Users of HIPERLAN 2 -based products will have broadband untethered access to Internet, Intranets and Extranets",
explains Reijo Paajanen, Senior Vice President, Product Creation, at Nokia Wireless Business Communications. "With the
products supporting the HIPERLAN 2 standard, Nokia intends to move wireless networking to a level which enables a
variety of demanding IP applications of the next millennium, such as real-time multimedia and interactive e-business
services."
The first HIPERLAN2 compliant products are expected to be commercially available in volumes in 2002. In the meantime,
Nokia is committed to establish HIPERLAN 2 as the global standard of choice for the wireless LAN product design in order
to ensure vendor interoperability.
According to Mr. Paajanen: "Nokia anticipates that HIPERLAN 2 will be adopted as international standard for the next
generation of wireless LAN products. In order to contribute to this outcome, we are delighted to be working in the
HiperLAN2 Global Forum."
Nokia entered the wireless LAN market in May 1999 by introducing IEEE 802.11-based Nokia C020/C021 Wireless LAN Cards
and Nokia A020/AO21 Wireless LAN Access Points. The wireless LAN market place is expected to explode over the next three
years, thanks to the adoption of open standards and the growth in mobile use of the Internet.

HIPERLAN (HIgh PErformance Radio LAN) 2 is the all new high performance radio technology, specifically suited for
operating in LAN environments. HIPERLAN 2 is being developed within the European Telecommunications Standardisation
Institute (ETSI) and a final specification is due to be finalised at the end of 1999. The standard will ensure overall
interoperability among wireless systems and devices at the data rate of up to 54 megabits per second. HIPERLAN 2 -based
products operate in the unlicensed 5 gigahertz (GHz) frequency band, which has been specifically allocated to wireless
LAN's.
