NZ-Made Web System A First For APEC

Published: Tue 7 Sep 1999 03:48 PM
For the first time in APEC history, an Internet-based registration management system is being used to manage the more than 20,000 registrations by media, officials and politicians from APEC's 21 member economies.
Built with JADE by Wang New Zealand and Secure ID, the web system allows delegates to register for APEC 99 events from anywhere in the world, rather than having to fill out paper forms and mail or fax them.
According to Jamie Tevendale, the APEC Task Force's IT Director, the benefits are already apparent. "We are getting excellent feedback from the member economies. The system is improving data accuracy because people are entering names they are familiar with directly into the system, and we are saving on the need to re-key thousands of registration forms.
The APEC Task Force searched the world before deciding to have a system built in JADE. "I looked at about a dozen software packages from all over the world including Australian, American and the UK," says Mr Tevendale.
"I thought that running a conference would be the same no matter where you are or what kind of conference it is, but we have some fairly unique requirements that precluded us using any of the software packages we looked at.
"So we decided we were going to have to do some software development and we wanted to keep that as simple as possible. We wanted it to be pretty quick and we had specific requirements. We went out to tender and we selected Wang to do the job and selected JADE as the development environment."
JADE's General Manager, Sales and Marketing, Owen Scott says his company is proud to have provided the technology behind such a successful system. "JADE is one of the most significant technologies to have emerged from this part of the world, so it is appropriate that APEC have used it to deliver a great web system for the member economies."
