FISHERIES LEGISLATION COULD FORCE NZ HIGH SEAS FISHING INDUSTRY ACROSS THE TASMAN.
Sanford Limited managing director Eric Barratt said today that his company was very concerned about the impact New
Zealand fisheries legislation would have on New Zealand companies who wanted to expand their global fishing operations.
" We have been served with a particularly restrictive piece of legislation in the form of Fisheries Amendment Bill No3.
It will force many New Zealand companies to consider their options," he said.
The Fisheries Amendment Bill No 3 elevates New Zealand law above that of other nations.
"In contrast the Australian Fisheries Bill is much more supportive of industry. The net result of that will be some
companies will look at the option of operating from Australia or even further afield."
"What is particularly galling is that New Zealanders may have to renounce their citizenship and hand back their kiwi
passports to continue fishing activities overseas."
"The loss to the New Zealand economy is likely to be significant. New Zealand people, plant and the intellectual capital
of the New Zealand fishing industry will instead be used to benefit other nations."
