“The public will have noticed an increase in strike action of late. Such activity can be expected in the political
lead-up to the election in an attempt to discredit the Employment Contracts Act,” Steve Marshall, Chief Executive of the
New Zealand Employers’ Federation, said today.
However, the public should not be fooled.
“What the public should keep in mind is that all the strike action is being undertaken by people employed under trade
union-controlled collective contracts – exactly the structure the Labour Party intends to promote and encourage across
all business and industry if it becomes government,” Mr Marshall said.
The decision to take strike action is not a failing or weakness of the Employment Contracts Act as some would have us
believe. Rather this increase in strike action is a portent of things to come if Labour is given the opportunity to
bring in its union-sponsored legislation,” Mr Marshall concluded.
