May 1999 Retail Trade Survey figures, released today by Statistics New Zealand, are the first to be published within 35 days of the end of the survey month. This is 10 to 14 days earlier than previously. The earlier release is a significant step towards improving the usefulness of this important short-term economic indicator.
This result has only been achievable because of the co-operation Statistics New Zealand received from retailers. It would not be possible to release the figures so soon after the end of the reference month without this assistance. Statistics New Zealand thanks respondents, and will continue to work with them to make it as easy as possible for them to supply information.
Retail activity represents a significant component of Gross Domestic Product, and the earlier release of this information will help in monitoring the economy more effectively. Retailers themselves are now getting more timely feedback on what is happening in their sector or region.
