Over 350 surveyors and spatial professionals with a diverse range of skills will be arriving in Auckland next week to
attend the annual Surveying and Spatial New Zealand (S+SNZ) conference.
“We are the sector’s peak professional organisation in New Zealand and the conference being in Auckland makes it
particularly relevant as the city addresses the housing crisis,” says Rebecca Strang, President, “we are a stakeholder
across a wide range of government policy areas and the sector including housing development, land subdivision,
construction, infrastructure, spatial information and technology, and resource management”
S+SNZ members are lead professionals for the delivery of residential developments and subdivisions. They are involved
from the beginning of feasibility investigations and concept plan development of our urban communities, often
facilitating the planning and resource consent processes and managing the subdivision construction process. They are
also instrumental in designing and defining new property rights from high-rise buildings to underground infrastructure.
The value of spatial information in shaping tomorrow’s communities cannot be underestimated. It covers all aspects of
our lives by enabling better decision-making for communities, not just the physical development work. Spatial
information helps drives the process of digital engineering, community engagement, developing and managing smart future
communities, improving economic, environmental, health and wellbeing outcomes.”
“I am absolutely delighted with the level of interest”, says Rebecca, “the conference gets better and better each year
and with a theme of Shaping Tomorrow’s Communities, the programme is very future-focussed ensuring delegates maintain
their currency of knowledge and are positioned well for the future, which is critical in our rapidly evolving
environment.
As a diverse group of professionals, we find working together enables us to have greater impact where it matters most
and helps us all remain at the cutting-edge. How our communities respond to their challenges and opportunities will be
informed by these conference sessions. Delegates will be able walk away with an understanding of the outstanding
opportunities ahead of them to help shape the communities of the future.”
The conference is being opened by National MP and spokesperson for Building and Construction, Andrew Bayly at the Cordis
Hotel, 9 May.
Included in the programmes is a dynamic half-day session for high school students showing the career options available,
and the type of projects surveyors and spatial professionals get involved in. A dedicated spatial day including
international keynote speaker, Ed Parsons from Google will be on Friday, 10 May.
