We Built This City on Sausage Rolls (Again)
13 August 2018 – Radio station Coast is endeavoring to confirm a hotly contested topic; who is responsible for the best sausage roll in New Zealand. Teaming up with Kiwi Masterchef legend and Coast ambassador Brett McGregor once again, they are embarking on a six-week search to determine who will wear the crown of Sausage Roll Royalty.
Coast has invited the nation to nominate the best sausage roll from all over the country, sharing who made it and where the delicious delicacy was developed. McGregor and the Coast team will personally taste test the top five rolls before announcing the winner live on Coast.
‘We Built This City on Sausage Rolls’ aims to find which New Zealand city or town has built their reputation on being home to the best sausage roll.
Coast content director David Brice said, “It was such a success last year; we decided to run it again. It’s a chance for our audience all over the country to get involved. The humble Kiwi sausage roll will once again be in the spotlight as we search for the nation’s best”.
The defending champions are the Ward Street Bakery in Dunedin, who said in a recent interview with Jason and Bernadine that they will certainly be entering again. “It’s really helped our business out winning that award, and people still seem to love them – we’re selling trays and trays of them!”
The entire line up of Coast announcers are behind the search, each with their own favourite way to devour the popular pastries.
Breakfast host Jason Reeves says he has learnt a lot from this prestigious award. “I always knew sausage rolls are a part of Kiwi cuisine but when we launched the first search for New Zealand’s best, I saw first-hand just how passionate a lot of people are! The debates were strong on whether tomato sauce goes next to – or poured on top of – the sausage roll, whether sesame seeds had any place on top on the pastry and whether carrots should or shouldn’t be in the meat. One thing almost everyone agrees on though is that pretty much any staff meeting is instantly better with sausage rolls on the table!”
His co-host Bernadine Oliver-Kerby says it’s a Kiwi favourite that’s trotted out at any occasion. “No matter the function, it’s the first plate to take a hammering.
What I can’t abide is when Kiwis make excuses for the indulgence. ‘Oh alright then, just the one...’. Own it New Zealand! It’s never just one!! One, two or ten, eat it and eat it your way.”
JT on Drive likes to make his meal last. “I like a sausage roll with really flaky pastry so I share most of it with my top. And then you have some pastry for later. Better living everyone!”
Lorna Subritzky on Days only has eyes for a very specific type of sausage roll. “I can’t go past the one at our local bakery: flaky pastry, egg glaze, plenty of onion but absolutely no carrots or peas. And it can’t be too dry! A little tomato sauce and it’s heaven in a brown paper bag."
Nominations for the best sausage roll are now open here.
Tune in to Coast to hear how it all rolls out.
