Leading New Zealand Illustrator Puts a Sock in it
Mt Maunganui-based illustrator Becca Aiken has launched product number one in her new range of outdoor-inspired menswear - just in time for Christmas. Merino socks for the stylish man who likes to spend time outdoors. The man we all know is a nightmare to shop for.
Aiken, a professional illustrator, is best known for her recent stunning pencil work project for Tiger. Her fierce, personality-plus tiger sketch was commissioned as part of a collaborative campaign between Tiger & WWF – a campaign highlighting the devastatingly low number of tigers left in the wild. Aiken’s commanding pencil sketch was a revered artistic contribution to the campaign, and has given the world a glimpse of what she is capable of.
Growing up, Aiken spent her holidays fly fishing with her father at the family bach in Lake Tarawera. Since early on in her career, she has been drawn to the humble fishing fly – transforming it, alongside various species of fish and character animals, into beautiful, timeless works of art. The pieces were so well received by her customers and the public that her work began to focus on fishing and nature elements, specifically the intricate fishing fly: something every fisherman can connect with.
In October 2017 she saw an opportunity to combine her illustrations with a high quality clothing product, when she discovered a gap in the outdoor menswear market.
“Pretty Fly” launched in December, with a functional and fashionable outdoor sock. The luxuriously warm (or cool) natural fibres of merino wool forms the perfect marriage with Aiken’s incredibly lifelike illustrations.
Pretty Fly plans to continue developing their range of high-fashion outdoor clothing by launching new products in 2018.
