Affordable housing without the need for government funding.
GP International Limited (GPI) has a close relationship with the Australian company Amoveo which undertakes modular
house construction in Australia, PNG and elsewhere. GPI has been in discussions with Amoveo to get their cost effective
affordable house construction system brought to New Zealand. Through GPI, Amoveo has approached the new Labour-led
government with a proposal to build in New Zealand, large numbers of high quality modular affordable houses that are
self-funded. The unparalleled opportunity presented by this approach, will enable NZ to get its housing shortage sorted
promptly without the government having to provide the capital funding.
Gary Milne, GPI director and a Melbourne-based Kiwi, is also a spokesman for Amoveo. Milne said “In addition to
supplying large numbers of high quality affordable houses made from fully recyclable materials, these houses are highly
energy efficient. They are also built and engineered to withstand earthquakes.”
Milne added “GPI will also assist Amoveo in setting up modular house production factories in New Zealand, similar to the
car assembly model. This will ensure that we will be able to create present and future long term employment in New
Zealand with introduction of new skills to the New Zealand building industry.”
Amoveo would be ready to start supplying houses within 16 weeks of being contracted to do so. If the infrastructure and
permitting were in place, actual house construction time on site would be days, rather than weeks or months. Because
these houses will be funded by Amoveo there are no financial obstacles that could constrain the NZ government from
proceeding with this approach. Such housing at affordable cost could be rent-to-buy over 10 to 15 years managed and
maintained by the New Zealand government. This will release pressure that comes with governmental budgetary constraints
and will enable the government funds that are currently targeted at housing, to be diverted to other important
programmes such as health, education, child care and the elderly.
Milne said “Production could be quickly ramped up to supply 200 to 500 houses per month if this is required and the land
is available with permitting in place.”
This is a unique opportunity for places like Auckland or Queenstown to have their affordable housing shortage rapidly
sorted. All it needs is for the new Labour-led government to take the initiative and engage with Amoveo to make the
dream of affordable housing to the masses a reality.
