Ohakune in the Lead to Host Richie Mccaw in Mastercard’s ‘Tap for Your Town’ Campaign
10 August 2017 – Winter hotspots are front-runners in Mastercard’s ‘Tap for your Town’ competition with the Ohakune in the lead to secure the opportunity for Richie McCaw to visit their town and host the ultimate game of touch rugby.
The competition will give the town with the most number of contactless payment transactions (aka ‘Taps’) per capita the chance to take on Richie McCaw and his hand-picked team in a game of touch.
Mastercard’s ‘Tap for your town’ competition is at the half-way point so it’s still anybody’s game with entries closing on Sunday 27 August 2017.
Based on current rankings, the top ten New Zealand towns are:
1. Ohakune7 Kaikoura
2. Queenstown8 Otorohanga
3. Twizel9= Kawerau
4. Ashburton9= Levin
5. Hokitika10= Taupo
6. Amberley10= Marton
“We’ve made it a very level playing field by counting transactions per capita, so big and small towns all have a fair crack at winning. We’ve also only counted Kiwi transactions as part of the competition – no international tourist transactions are included so it’s all fair and square. I must say, I am a little disappointed my hometown of New Plymouth isn’t in the top 10 towns yet. C’mon Taranaki!” said Peter Chisnall, Country Manager for Mastercard New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
“While we’re not giving anything away, the numbers are close so there’s still plenty of time for Kiwis to get tapping to win the opportunity for Richie McCaw to visit their town and play touch against a local team. It will be a David vs Goliath battle, but who wouldn’t want to see local stars running out onto the field to take on Richie and his team!”
According to a recent Mastercard survey of more than 1,000 New Zealanders, Kiwis are already switching on to the benefits of contactless technology with almost three quarters (72%) using their cards to ‘tap and go’ for transactions under $80, or to ‘tap and PIN’ when making a payment for more than $80.
Chisnall added, “More than half of Kiwis are now using contactless technology at least once a week. Contactless payments are one of the most secure ways to pay as the card remains in the customers hands at all times, improving the speed and security of the transaction for both the shopper and the retailer.
“This competition is all about encouraging Kiwis to get tapping in order to reap the many benefits contactless payments offer. We’re all about bringing priceless experiences to our customers and facing off against Richie on the field is an opportunity that many Kiwis could only dream off – until now.”
