Title: Tasman: Seamless Project Management

There is no shortage of project management applications out there, from simple apps that do one thing well, to complex
all-in-one systems.
The problem with simple project management apps is that many of them need to be stringed together to handle your entire
workflow. This can often lead to app-overload and maintenance headaches down the road. The all-in-one systems often
still miss important components and may overwhelm users with complex interfaces and features than are not needed.
When Christchurch-based web development firm Custom D wanted something to help manage their own projects, they came up
short:
“We tried so many different applications but they were either too basic, or too complex. It was hard to find something
in the middle that was well designed and handled the entire workflow. For instance many of them had nice todo lists and
project tracking but offered no integrated billing or time entry. You always had to use another app for that. Soon
enough this approach eliminates the efficiency these apps are designed to create”
Custom D set about creating their own simple end-to-end project management system and Tasman was born.
A key point of difference with Tasman is that it handles everything from the initial client setup, through to time
entries, and finally billing the client. Invoices are generated and sent to the client’s email account and optionally
pushed through to Xero for accounting.
“This end-to-end workflow has made us so much more efficient. To think about how we used to do things: recording time
here, tallying up, manually generating invoices, the new system is transformational”.
Another key feature which sets Tasman apart is the ability for clients to login and view their projects, tasks, budgets,
and a real-time reflection of where things are at. This transparency has lead to better working relationships. Instead
of a client getting a bill at the end of the month and wondering what certain items were for, they are kept involved and
engaged throughout the project. They can also upload notes, files, and communicate with developers.
Tasman is now being released as an app for other firms. It’s targeted primarily at web developers and designers, though
it can be customised to work for a wide range of industries.
