Open Letter on International Volunteer Manager’s Day - 5 Nov

Published: Mon 7 Nov 2016 09:51 AM
Dear CEOs,
Volunteers play a vital role in many organisations, from delivering services and connecting with communities to helping to realise an organisation’s vision.
The best of volunteering, for both organisations and volunteers, relies on the best possible management of volunteers.
The role of a Volunteer Manager involves diverse skills and practice. That’s why this year's theme for International Volunteer Managers Day is “One Role, Many Hats”
Based on our experiences working with organisations in developing the Best Practice Guidelines, here are some ways to help volunteer managers achieve greater success throughout the year:
Ensure the contribution made by volunteers is reflected in organisational strategic plan and goals.
Acknowledge the achievements of the volunteer manager, particularly in recruitment, placement and support of volunteers.
Recognise the unique skills of your volunteer manager in building relationships with volunteers and with paid staff, ensuring best outcomes for your organisation.
Encourage and support volunteer managers to access professional development and peer support opportunities.
Take a look at our Best Practice Toolkit and Guidelines to see what resonates.
Take your hat off to managers of volunteers as skilled professionals in their area of expertise!
As we approach International Volunteer Managers Day we’d like to say thank you to your organisation for its support of volunteering and for the many hats worn by your volunteer manager. We’d like them to know how much they are valued and appreciated.
