Prendergast
deserves huge vote of thanks, says Chamber
Kerry Prendergast deserves huge thanks for the contribution she has made to the city, says Wellington Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive John Milford.
He is commenting as the former mayor steps down after 24 years on the board behind the city’s New Zealand Festival, the last six years as its executive chair.
“Kerry has served this city exceedingly well and deserves a huge vote of thanks from every Wellingtonian.
“Not only did she serve with distinction as mayor for three terms, from 2001 to 2010, but she has been on the Festival board for all but six of its 30 years of existence. Together that shows an amazing dedication to our city without which we would be the poorer.
“Just during her time as chair we have been treated to three New Zealand Festivals, four Wellington Jazz Festivals, three Lexus Song Quests, and several special events, including this year’s sold-out Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
“These events have helped make Wellington the events capital of New Zealand, and put us firmly on the international events stage. The economic contribution they have made to the city has been enormous, and a lot of that is down to the dedication and time of Kerry and the people around her.
“We’re going to miss her influence on our arts and culture scene.”
Mr Milford welcomed the appointment of Geoff Dangerfield, former CEO of the NZ Transport Agency and the Ministry of Economic Development, and deputy secretary to the Treasury, to replace Mrs Prendergast.
“Geoff is a great supporter of the arts and I know he will do a great job. He will know that he has enormous shoes to fill.”
