Boxing Day Bargains Lure Shoppers After Christmas

Auckland, New Zealand – December 21, 2015 – A quarter of New Zealanders will make additional purchases on Boxing Day as they search for bargains after Christmas.
MasterCard’s annual Christmas Shopping Research found that although only 4% of people will hold off buying gifts until the Boxing Day Sales, 25% of people intend to make additional purchases on top of their Christmas shopping.
The bulk of Boxing Day shoppers will use local shops and service providers (44%), this is followed by big box retailers (37%) and New Zealand based online retailers (9%).
“Boxing Day sales are a popular shopping time for Kiwis. Kiwis take advantage of the days after Christmas to particularly purchase items for themselves or large appliances,” says Peter Chisnall, Country Manager for MasterCard New Zealand.
“While Christmas shopping can be stressful in picking the right gift, almost a third of those surveyed strongly agreed that Boxing Day sales are ‘stressful and not worth the hassle’. As the prevalence and popularity of online shopping increases, people can find deals from the comfort of their own home rather than going into the store during the rush,” says Chisnall.
41% of respondents said it was easier to shop online to get Boxing Day deals than go in store, and 66% of New Zealanders regularly shop online.
54% of those surveyed said they still liked to check goods out in store prior to purchasing either in-store or online. 18% of shoppers said they will research online for Boxing Day deals and then go in-store, while 13% will just go in to the stores.
For the first time the survey asked what would people spend money on if “Christmas was cancelled” this year. 39% of New Zealanders said they would put the money into investments, following by paying off debt (29%) and taking a domestic holiday (22%). Others said they would buy a new motorbike, buy some designer clothing, go out for an extra special meal, buy additional birthday gifts or make a donation to their favourite charity.
