Smarter working made possible through engaging Cortex
New Zealand software company Sense Medical will be launching their ground-breaking application “Cortex” at the HINZ
conference in Christchurch next week.
Cortex is an iPhone and iPad application designed by clinicians for clinicians, to improve the quality of patient care
and the efficiency of hospital medical teams.
Dr. Alistair Rumball-Smith, Sense Medical’s Co-Founder and Clinical Lead, says the application is an innovative and
exciting example of using mobile technology to help to eliminate inefficiencies within the health system.
“Cortex replaces the paper patient list used by doctors to track patient care tasks with a synchronised and secure
electronic task management tool,” he says.
Dr Rumball-Smith says the application also provides bedside clinical note documentation, electronic ordering of
diagnostic tests, notification of results availability, and then direct access to the results themselves.
“Traditional paper-based systems no longer fit in with the models of care required in the modern health system. Cortex
frees up clinicians to spend more time doing what they do best, providing care.”
The application’s development has been a collaborative project with Canterbury District Health Board through their Via
Innovations initiative that supports getting emerging health technology solutions into production. Although developed in
Canterbury, Cortex is designed to be used in any hospital around the world.
Mr. Saxon Connor, General Surgeon, says it has transformed the General Surgical wards at Christchurch Hospital.
“Cortex has fundamentally changed our department for the better. We’re working smarter, quicker and more safely,” Mr
Connor says.
“The whole clinical team is now always on the same page, and junior doctors can now spend more time looking after
patients rather than on ‘paperwork’. It’s an incredible change and we’re excited to be at the forefront.”
The HiNZ Conference is New Zealand's premier event for health informatics being held in Christchurch for 4 days from
October 19. This year's theme is COLLABORATE and the conference will attract a diverse group of around 800 delegates
including clinicians, health sector managers, academics, educators, government, IT professionals and industry.
