HBRC workforce bucks national trend
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s staff turnover is bucking the national average.
In the Council’s latest Human Resources Annual Report for 2014-15 staff turnover was just 6%, down from 9% the previous
year and half that of other local government organisations around the country. The report showed the average tenure of
staff at the Dalton Street offices was nine years, with those at the Council’s Works Group staying on average 12 years.
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Interim Chief Executive Liz Lambert says the result is extremely pleasing and indicates
staff are committed to their roles. The report pointed to a highly qualified workforce that is necessary to meet the
varied needs of the organisation’s work in the region.
Mrs Lambert says the council employs a diverse range of staff with a wealth of skill and expertise in a wide variety of
fields.
“We have experts in a range of professions including, water, climate and soil, land management, resource management,
planning, and economic.”
Meanwhile, HBRC’s health and safety record for last year showed 31 work related incidents or accidents, just six of them
at its Works Group but with no time off work.
Mrs Lambert says this is an excellent outcome, particularly considering the type of work the Works Group undertakes,
which includes construction and river and drainage work. The other 25 workplace accidents were to Dalton Street,
Waipukurau or Wairoa staff resulting in 10.7 days off work. There were no serious harm incidents.
Mrs Lambert says “This is a pleasing result given the uncertainty caused by the reorganisation poll, and I am delighted
that staff remained focused and committed to their work throughout this period.”
