Jobs data will help students, business, says Chamber
Requiring tertiary education providers to publish data about the employment status and earnings of graduates is a big
step forward in helping people choose careers that are in demand, says the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.
Chief Executive John Milford says in today’s rapidly changing world it’s vital that students have the best information
possible to help them gain qualifications and train for jobs that actually exist.
“Publishing the employment status and earnings of their graduates broken down by specific degrees and diplomas will help
students choose career paths that are better suited to demand and the economy.
“This is win-win. It will help make it easier for students to get a job when they graduate and it will better ensure
that employers have access to skilled people.
“One of the big issues that employers are facing is finding skilled people, and I have no doubt that in time this
approach will help alleviate that.
“Ensuring that the skills people develop in tertiary education are well matched to labour market needs makes perfect
sense.
“We look forward to watching this develop and studying the results.”
